This narrative essay asks you to (1) identify some of the highlights in your literacy background (reading, writing, and speaking) over time, (2) reflect on how they may have influenced your sense of identity, AND (3) set several literacy goals for English 100.
In a way, you’re telling a story about yourself--a narrative of your progress as a reader and writer and speaker--a sort of literacy autobiography, if you will—and the direction you want your literacy to take this semester. You MIGHT consider some of the following questions as a way of developing material for the essay:
. What are the major influences on your literacy development? Teachers? Parents?
Friends? Authors? Certain tools or instruments? Social Media? Experiences and/or
events?
. What are your earliest memories of writing, reading, and/or speaking? What are the
most positive experiences you remember? the most painful? the most significant?
. What effect—if any--have your elementary, middle and/or high school years had on
your literacy? Has a particular course or instructor affected you? Has an event in your
personal life had significant impact on your literacy?
. What are your most recent experiences with reading, writing, and/or speaking? How
do they differ from earlier ones? How have they changed over time?
. How do you write? How do you read? How do you prepare a presentation? Do you have particular approaches you use--a particular environment you seek out to do your best? Have the approaches changed over time?
. Which of your past writings please you most? What reading did you enjoy the most?
When do you NOT enjoy writing or reading or speaking?
. How satisfied are you with your writing? Reading? Speaking? What recurring suggestions have been made by others about your literacy over time? Where do you want to or need to
focus your attention this semester?
To help develop and illustrate statements about yourself, refer to specific papers you've written and/or subjects that you've enjoyed reading, writing, and speaking about.
