The Interactive Field Report assignment requires students to write a 5-6 page paper based on careful
observations of an interactive environment, whether a children’s museum, museum of science and
industry, virtual reality environment, interactive restaurant, or even an arcade. The intent of this
assignment is to put you “in the field” to observe some actual interactivity in society, so video game
playing at home doesn't qualify (although attending a massive LAN party would).
For this assignment, you may visit a children’s museum (e.g., Science Spectrum in Lubbock, or the
Harrington Discovery Center in Amarillo), entertainment center (e.g., The Main Event in Lubbock), or even
an “interactive restaurant” (e.g., Chuck-E-Cheese’s or Dave & Busters). The intent of this assignment is to
put you “in the field” as an observer of interactive engagement, and then to systematically analyze the
results of your observations. When deciding which interactive experience to pursue, keep in mind that
what you observe needs to involve user experiences with, and reactions to, technology. By users, I
mostly mean “kids at the museum with their parents,” but it may be adults, too (or college students). Kids
at play are especially fascinating to watch.
