For this assignment, you are asked to undertake independent,
original research on a cultural issue of your choice. In this course we have
encountered many cultural issues, including class conflict, work and
alienation, dis/ability, gender and sexuality, race and racism, colonialism,
nations and nationalism, transnationalism, multiculturalism, aboriginality, and
the cultural politics of faith. All of these topics have important geographical
connections, ranging in scale from global relations to national borders to
institutional settings to domestic spaces.
What is a bibliographic essay? A bibliographic essay is an
organized overview or synthesis of a subject. Sometimes called a literature
review, it introduces readers to major sources and key issues and authorities,
giving readers a good basis for learning more about a given subject. Typically
a bibliographic essay has an introduction (which introduces the scope of your
topic and identifies your texts and organizing perspective or orientation to
them), a body (a well-structured discussion of your sources and the issues they
raise), and a conclusion (which links your topic to broader issues of culture
and place).
