Contracts, Consumer Protection Law, Regulatory Law and Corporate Social Responsibility - Custom Essay

As this article reports, lawsuits have been filed in federal courts (California and Nevada, to date) against Dollar Thrifty Rent-a-Car alleging that the corporation has engaged in “unfair and deceptive business practices” in charging consumers for unwanted insurance for their car rentals.  According to the article, a spokeswoman for Dollar Thrifty said, “the company intend(s) to defend the cases vigorously.”

I’m trying to figure out what the problem is here – this seems like a simple consumer contract case, but maybe there’s something fishy going on --

Imagine:  You've just gotten off the plane in Reno, Nevada and you’re psyched to start your vacation. (So far so good.)You want to rent a car – maybe you upgrade to a convertible –  you either elect to take the insurance coverage offered by the rental car company or you decline it at your option (and your risk). You’re a careful consumer, a savvy business student. You read the rental agreement before you sign it,  and you decline the company’s car insurance option.

This assignment brings together some general course themes we've considered in Contracts, Consumer Protection Law, Regulatory Law and Corporate Social Responsibility.
