James
Rachels explains the main arguments for cultural relativism. Rachels then
presents his criticisms of cultural relativism, which focus on taking the
consequences of cultural relativism seriously.
For this
RAW assignment, you will write three arguments from different perspectives. Be
as detailed as possible in adopting each perspective, especially for
perspective 1.
Perspective 1: Write an argument from the
first-person perspective of someone who supported apartheid in South Africa, or
who supports the preference for male over female children in India. The
argument should be grounded in cultural relativism, as it is explained in
Rachels’ article, and should include at least one supporting quote from the
text.
Perspective 2: Write an argument from the
first-person perspective of James Rachels criticizing the argument given in
perspective 1. The argument should be grounded in Rachels’ actual criticisms of
cultural relativism, and should include at least two supporting quotes from the
text. The argument should address at least one of consequences of cultural
relativism that Rachels considers.
Your Perspective: Write an argument from your own
first-person perspective that supports your opinion about who is right,
perspective 1 or perspective 2.
